NEW YORK — The landscape slowly will change in the name of shore protection, with once-vibrant oyster reefs growing again to slow wave action, ecotourism sites drawing people away from the beach toward bays and marshes, and dune systems and elevated boardwalks guarding the oceanfront.

That’s the goal behind Rebuild by Design, a federally funded competition to prepare coastal areas for future storms.

Raising the Asbury Park boardwalk and creating a landscaped dune system underneath it was one of the 41 ideas unveiled Monday morning at New York University.
