NEW BRUNSWICK — Crackling over the dry brittleness of fallen branches and sloshing in streams to a soggy river bank, a dozen volunteers collected and carried bags of trash from Johnson Park on Thursday as part of the Raritan River Rubbish Roundup.

A county Parks and Recreation Department pickup truck continually was filled as Elyse Foladare, a recent Bard College graduate from East Brunswick, led the volunteers through vines and mud patches.
