What’s not to like about a snake?

They’re cute and colorful. They’re sleek and sinuous. They have sweet little forked tongues. You can give them fun nicknames, like “slitherpuss” and “snake-aboo.”

Or not.

In this Year of the Snake — which begins Sunday, Lunar New Year — America is home to nearly 1 million owners of pet snakes, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. It is also home to at least an equal number of snake-averse people who would sooner walk barefoot on ground glass or sleep next to a dynamite factory.
