The star visitors from up north

By Jim Wright: The holidays may be over, but serious birders still have visions of snowy owls and northern shrikes dancing in their heads.

That's the star power of these occasional visitors from the north. When either of these birds is sighted in North Jersey — every few years or so — they draw bird-watchers from all over the Middle Atlantic states. Birders will wait for hours in hopes of a glimpse of either bird, and even non-birders will go out of their way for a look at a snowy owl.
