NorthJersey.com: Lack of rainfall impacting vernal ponds, lakes in New Jersey


The blue spotted salamander, which is found in Kinnelon and West Milford, might be affected by the lack of rainfall this year. It depends on vernal ponds to breed.

The drier than normal weather this year brings with it some good news, as less water means less of a chance it will flood, giving flood-weary residents a potential respite from the almost annual deluge.

But the lack of rainfall is impacting the environment in other more subtle ways, as water sources like vernal ponds and lakes are beginning to evaporate with little signs of being replenished in the near future.
