Nature's Focus: The White-throated Sparrow

During the winter season I look forward to seeing the numerous species of birds which frequent our backyard feeders, and it is very interesting to see how many winter visitors tend to remain there, so long as the feeders remain full.  Yet for some reason this winter, there appears to be a lesser amount of species and those which are present are in lower than normal numbers.

One species which is taking advantage of our many feeders, and one which is truly a distinctively patterned bird is the White-throated Sparrow, (Zonotrichia albicollis).  The White-throated Sparrow is one of the larger sparrows which have long legs, a long & narrow tail, and a very crisp set of markings on its face and head.  The top of its head has black & white stripes, the throat is a brilliant white with a thin black outline, and its lores are a deep yellow color.  Their overall body colors are brown above and gray/light gray below. There are also two “versions” of the White-throated Sparrow, one being the “White-striped” and the other being the “Tan-striped”.

Generally you will see numerous White-throated Sparrows together, perched in low and dense shrubbery and also when they scratch the ground in search of food.  They are a common sight during the winter months as they can be found in the woods, local parks and at any backyard feeders.  One trick which is helpful for the sparrows is to build a brush pile of assorted sticks, evergreen boughs and other natural material placed within ten feet of your feeders.  This mini habitat will provide them with a place to hide from predators, as they scurry between the feeders and ground as they look for food.
