We saw this rare Black-backed [Eastern Gray] Squirrel in Rutherford near the Community Gardens last week.

We saw this not-so-rare Great Black-backed Gull on the Saw Mill Mudflats in DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst, earlier this month.

NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse reports a great fall bird-banding season by the former Erie Landfill in North Arlington: 46 species and nearly 3,000 birds in all. Most-frequently banded species: the Savannah Sparrow, a threatened species in New Jersey —700 banded. Photo above is of the banding station during a lull in the action.

Jim Wright writes, photographs, maintains a nature blog
and does slide shows and walks for the N.J. Meadowlands Commission. "Focus on the Meadowlands" features some of his recent photos of the area's natural wonders.
