Focus on the Meadowlands: Winter Sunset, Common Raven, Horned Grebe

Sunsets can be spectacular this time of year at DeKorte – just need the right amount of clouds.



We were scouting Laurel County Park for this month’s free Third-Tuesday Guided Walk with Bergen County Audubon, hoping to see if the Common Ravens were around.  They are. We are hoping the nest on the cliff again this spring, as they have for the past several years. Also seen: Northern Harrier, Red-tail, Sharpie, Great Blue Heron, Hooded Mergansers, assorted dickie birds. Check the Meadowlands nature Blog (see below) for details on the walk.



NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse spotted the Horned Grebe above in mid-December on our Christmas Bird Count. Happy to get a photo as this guy seems to be diving 80 percent of the time.  We have looked for this bird a few times since then, with no luck.
