WNJ Exclusive: Second annual photo contest winners announced!

WildNewJersey.tv today announced the winners of their Second Annual Photography contest.  Robert Lopshire of Frenchtown took home first prize in the Wildlife category for his photo of a praying mantis sitting on a flower in Kingwood.  Chase Schiefer of Hazlet won first prize in the Scenery category for his photo of the Hog Wallow Cranberry Harvest in Burlington County.

The contest received 165 entries, covering a wide range of New Jersey's often overlooked natural splendor and unique biodiversity.  Depending on rank and choice, winners will receive an iTunes gift card, a signed copy of Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State, or a Wild New Jersey t-shirt.

"New Jersey is not only home to bountiful nature and outdoor destinations - it holds some of the most talented and devoted nature photographers in the country," said Jill Weislo of Wild New Jersey. The other prize winners are as follows:
Second Prize, Wildlife: Jessica Kirste, Linden. Red Fox at Island Beach State Park.
Second Prize, Scenery: India Blake, Hopewell. Winter at a Hopewell farm.
Third Prize, Wildlife: Rob Melone, Hamilton. Little Egret and Atlantic City Skyline at Edwin B. Forsythe NWR.
Third Prize, Scenery: Mark Gorman, Manahawkin. Lighthouse at Barnegat Light.
Honorable Mention: Robert Lopshire, Frenchtown. Tree frog, Kingwood, NJ,
Honorable Mention:
Capt. Paul Eidman, Tinton Falls. Clearnose skate eye at Sandy Hook Beach.
Honorable Mention:
Donna Herrmann, High Bridge. Ferns at Willowwood Arboretum in Chester.
Honorable Mention:
Natalie Morawsky, Princeton. The Great Falls with a rainbow in Paterson.

The Scenery winners will run in a separate blog entry tomorrow morning, while the photos receiving Honorable Mention will run tomorrow afternoon on WildNewJersey.tv.  Winners and honorable mentions featured in the calendar will receive a free 2012 WildNewJersey.tv calendar.  For only $5, you can buy a calendar. Judging was done by a panel of WildNewJersey.tv correspondents, with decisions based on creativity, composition, and impact of conveying the uniqueness of each photo.  All winning photographs were taken within the State of New Jersey.
