A state appellate court today heard arguments from lawyers from a bear advocacy group opposing next week's black bear hunt and the state Department of Environmental Protection, and will decide whether the six-day season should open on Monday.

The hunt in the northwestern quadrant of the state should be canceled because the bear population estimates and bear encounter numbers compiled by the state are "disingenuous," argued Doris Lin, the attorney for the Animal Protection League of New Jersey and the Bear Education and Research group.
