New Jersey has more than 70 endangered species. To help generate awareness about them, the Conserve Wildlife Foundation (CWF) began the Species on the Edge art & essay contest.

Since 2003, 10,000 fifth graders have entered the contest. “This is a great grade to introduce children to endangered species,” explained Liz Silvernail, director of development for CWF. The children research an animal for the contest, which complements state curriculum.
