WNJ Exclusive: Snowy owl at Merrill Creek Reservoir

Photos by Orion Weldon

The first snowy owl of the New Jersey season has chosen Merrill Creek Reservoir as his host for the time being.  Photographer Orion Weldon captured these two photographs of this winter favorite of many New Jersey birdwatchers.  Weldon believes the bird may be a first-year female.

As always, any birdwatcher should exercise restraint and caution in viewing owls in the wild.  Do not approach the bird, and do not do anything that will disrupt its routine.  Owls are notoriously sensitive to human disturbance.

Wild New Jersey's David Wheeler devotes a chapter to the fascinating story of snowy owls in New Jersey, with an entertaining anecdote about his first sighting - in the New Jersey Meadowlands.  More information can be found at www.WildNewJerseyBook.tv.
