Several Brown Creepers moved through the Meadowlands earlier this month – NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse and his volunteers banded three in one day at the Commission’s banding station in North Arlington.
Harrier Meadow was the site for a free guided walk sponsored by Bergen County Audubon Society and NJMC. More than 50 birders participated. Top birds included at least three Bald Eagles, a few Meadowlarks, Northern Harriers and American Kestrels. A couple days later, an American Avocet was again seen in the 70-acre natural area.
American Kestrels have been perching along Disposal Road in Lyndhurst and hunting for grasshoppers and other bugs. From what we’ve seen, their success rate is excellent.
Jim Wright writes, photographs, maintains a nature blog (www.meadowblog.net) and does slide shows and walks for the N.J. Meadowlands Commission. "Focus on the Meadowlands" features some of his recent photos of the area's natural wonders.
