As the last of the Monarchs and Common Buckeyes migrate past the Meadowlands, we are getting ready for next year – dispersing Common Milkweed seeds and giving DeKorte Park’s Jill Ann Ziemkiewicz Memorial Butterfly Garden a fresh coat of paint and varnish. The milkweed seeds were donated by the Bergen County Audubon Society.

We saw these wildflowers growing atop the closed Erie landfill in North Arlington – against the backdrop of Manhattan. American Kestrels and Northern Harriers use the landfill as a prime hunting ground.
A few of us are lucky enough to see an Orange-crowned Warbler now and then. When NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse and his crew of volunteers banded one of the guys, we were able to see – and photograph – the crown itself.
Jim Wright writes, photographs, maintains a nature blog (www.meadowblog.net) and does slide shows and walks for the N.J. Meadowlands Commission. "Focus on the Meadowlands" features some of his recent photos of the area's natural wonders.
