The Jersey Shoreline: Fighting invasive species along Jersey beaches

Birthdays and anniversaries are often times for reflection and taking stock, especially those “round number” ones. So, when someone recently pointed out to me that it was ten years ago this year that I started my research on the Asiatic sand sedge (Carex kobomugi) and other coastal invasive species, it made me stop and think.

Early in this project, I wrote an article for this publication in which I told the story of how my career took a U-turn from studying salt marshes to studying invasive plants in coastal habitats as a result of a conversation with then New Jersey Sea Grant Extension Director, Dr. Susan Halsey ("Chance Conversation Plants the Seed for New Jersey Sea Grant Research Project." The Jersey Shoreline. 2002 Winter edition. pp. 12-14).
