This is a close-up of a young Black-billed Cuckoo, banded by NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse and his crew of volunteers last Friday. The team banded more than 300 birds by Harrier Meadow on Thursday. We saw Mr. Green hanging out in a tree by the NJMC’s soon-to-open River Barge Park in Carlstadt.
The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s last pontoon boat cruise was last Thursday night – featuring several great birds, including a Northern Harrier and an up-close Peregrine Falcon. This shot of the jack-knife bridge on the Hackensack River was taken a few seconds after sunset. We start again next May.
Jim Wright writes, photographs, maintains a nature blog (www.meadowblog.net) and does slide shows and walks for the N.J. Meadowlands Commission. "Focus on the Meadowlands" features some of his recent photos of the area's natural wonders.
