For bird-banders, sometimes it helps to double-check the ID. This photo was taken last week at the Meadowlands Commission’s Bird-banding station by Harrier Meadow. The photo’s message: A bird in the hand is worth two in the book.

Amazingly, an American Avocet has been hanging out in Harrier Meadow in North Arlington for more than four weeks. He likes to feed at low tide along the mud flats at the natural area’s far end, then loafs and sleeps during high tide at one of the 70-acre site’s tidal impoundments.

Wednesday, September 28th, marked the dedication of the Meadowlands Commission’s 5.5-acre River Barge Park and Marina on the Hackensack River in Carlstadt. The marina’s launching ramp will soon provide the first public boating access to the river’s western shore in Bergen County in decades. There will also be launch points for canoes, kayaks and sculls.

Jim Wright writes, photographs, maintains a nature blog (www.meadowblog.net) and does slide shows and walks for the N.J. Meadowlands Commission. "Focus on the Meadowlands" features some of his recent photos of the area's natural wonders.
