NorthJersey.com: Bears may pay you a backyard visit due to food shortage

More black bears could be hunting for food in back yards and around campsites this season because acorns and tree nuts are in short supply, state officials caution.

Acorns produced by a variety of oaks, as well as the nuts from beech, black walnut and hickory trees, are an important food source for bears this time of year as they start fattening up before hibernation. But this year's crop of nuts is far smaller than in the prior two years, officials say.

That means the bears will have to look for other sources of high calorie foods — like garbage cans outside homes.
