Courier Post: Feds push to protect Atlantic loggerhead turtles

Federal officials decided against downgrading western Atlantic loggerhead turtles to endangered species status, but said Friday they are continuing to push safeguards in the commercial fishing industry to reduce accidental turtle killings and captures.


“We’ll continue to do business as usual ... to ensure these populations are allowed to recover,” said Jim Lecky, director of the Office of Protected Resources in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in a conference call with reporters explaining the government’s decision.
