Some 4,600 sea turtles are killed each year by American fisheries, including many individuals of the four species found in New Jersey coastal waters, according to a new report published in the journal Biological Conservation.

Amazingly enough, that number, based on data from 2007, represents something of a triumph — it reflects a 90 percent reduction in death rates since 1990.  New Jersey coastal waters hold green sea turtles, loggerheads, leatherbacks, and Kemp's ridley sea turtles.
