With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 upon us, I thought I’d post a photo of part of The Cove, the Meadowlands Commission’s World Trade Center Memorial. If you stand in the designated spot and look at the silhouette, you can see how the Lower Manhattan skyline looked before the planes hit. The other part of the memorial is twin docks that jut out into the Shorebird Pool. Each dock has 110 planks, for each floor of the Twin Towers.

After the Meadowlands got walloped by Hurricane Irene, it was somehow reassuring to see these two Monarchs. They had survived the storm, and life indeed did go on.

It’s an ill wind that blows no good. Just after the storm, this American Avocet was seen in Harrier Meadow. It stayed around for at least four days. Whether it stays around for the Meadowlands Festival of Birding is a long shot, but we expect some good for this Saturday’s event at DeKorte Park.
