Asbury Park Press: Hurricane Irene pounding Jersey Shore on Sunday morning
>
Hurricane Irene’s center is crashing down over southern New Jersey and parts of Monmouth County, so the danger for flooding is high right now around Sandy Hook because higher-than-normal astronomical tides combine with Irene's storm surge. Around 5 a.m., a storm surge of 3.9 feet was observed at Sandy Hook, according to the weather service.
Throughout the coastal region, the “extremely dangerous” storm surge could raise water levels from 4 to 8 feet above ground level. It will be accompanied by large, destructive waves, the weather service reported.
