Focus on the Meadowlands: When a Peregrine Attacks

Thousands of Semipalmated Sandpipers were roosting on the docks at the N.J.Meadowlands Commission’s soon-to-open River Barge Park on the Hackensack River recently when they took flight all of a sudden — for a very good reason…

...A first-year Peregrine Falcon came flying out of the blue in search of his lunch. The falcon dive-bombed the dock four times and made several other passes but came up empty — although he did give several peeps and a young Forster’s Tern quite a chase.

The annual Butterfly Day at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst may be over, but we are still getting lots of neat butterflies (and hummingbird moths) on sunny days. Above is a Peck’s Skipper – a very tiny butterfly – photographed last week on a Butterfly Bush at DeKorte.

Jim Wright writes, photographs, maintains a nature blog (www.meadowblog.net) and does slide shows and walks for the N.J. Meadowlands Commission. "Focus on the Meadowlands" features some of his recent photos of the area's natural wonders.
