WNJ Exclusive: My first trip to DeKorte Park

Just yesterday I took my first trip to Richard W. DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.  I was in total awe as I walked down the floating boardwalk and looked out to see groups on Great Egrets lined up along the marsh.  Advanced birders were out in force with their long scopes hoping to spot a rare species, but being a novice birder, I was more than content with photographing some of the area's more common species.

My lists of birds included Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Yellowlegs, Snowy Egrets, Common Terns, Cormorants, and Semipalmated Sandpipers. I also caught a few glimpses of a muskrat while walking along the Marsh Discovery Trail.

I'd also like to add that DeKorte Park is a great place to bring dogs.  With a floating boardwalk, gravel trails, and other well kept trails, I didn't have to worry my dog getting ticks, which is rare in the summer, especially in August.  I definitely can't wait to go again and strongly recommend you take a trip there if you haven't already.

As you can tell, Lola enjoyed her walk through DeKorte Park as well!
