Two boys camping in Sussex County had a more direct encounter with wildlife than they expected Wednesday morning when a black bear entered their tents and swiped at them, state officials said.

An 11-year-old boy from Brooklyn and a 12-year-old from Jersey City were taken to a local hospital as a precaution after suffering a shoulder scratch and puncture wound from the yearling black bear, which entered their campground in the Gren Anderson section of Stokes State Forest sometime after 5 a.m., according to the Department of Environmental Protection.
