Don's Jersey Birding: Rediscover the Meadowlands on a Pontoon Boat Cruise

I am a proud child of the New Jersey Meadowlands. I spent my youth with my buddy Paul discovering and exploring every wonderful place of the meadows. Our summers and weekends were consumed with walking the trails (and sometimes making new ones) of what we considered our wilderness.
I always thought I knew every good birding spot and every really cool place there was in the Meadowlands. Even in later years as I became a more serious birder, I thought I had a good perception of what the Meadowlands was all about. It wasn’t until I took a guided boat ride deep into the Meadowlands that I discovered there was much more.

The good news is that there is a great and wonderful way to start your rediscovery adventure in the Meadowlands: a pontoon boat tour with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. Gabrielle Bennet-Meany, Naturalist for the NJMC, leads the leisurely and educational cruises through the marsh.

And a thriving ecosystem it is. The pontoon boat cruise is a great way to view the nesting Osprey that have returned to the Meadowlands. Peregrine Falcons can be seen hunting the marshes and sometimes roosting on the nearby bridges. Breeding Yellow-Crowned Night Herons are a common sight.
If you’re a shorebird fan, you should be running to book a seat on the next cruise. The number of birds at migration time is amazing. And as far as the boat itself goes, if you can imagine sitting on your living room couch eating pretzels and floating through the water that is how comfortable you will feel. Take it from me. I can get seasick on a flat bottom boat on a backyard bluegill pond. These boats are as stable as they come.

Many of us travel all over the state, country and even the world visiting unique wildlife habitats, searching for birds and looking for the next adventure in nature. This year, take a few hours and get out on a boat cruise to our Meadowlands and see it like you never have before. It’s the best $15.00 you will ever spend.
