A black bear was seen roaming the mostly suburban streets of Westfield on Tuesday morning before apparently crossing a busy thoroughfare and heading into a neighboring town, police said.

Police were first notified around 6:30 a.m., when a caller reported seeing the bear at Mountain and Birch avenues, township police Capt. Cliff Auchter said. Officers responded there and followed the animal for a period of time before losing sight of it.
