A wandering black bear was struck Thursday morning by a car on Route 202, but still managed to cross the highway and scale a tall tree behind a group of homes, police said.

The nearly 300-pound animal ultimately drew dozens of nearby residents who gathered on Anderson Street to watch as it rested in the branches over the next several hours. Around 4 p.m., police said, local firefighters were able were to remove the bear using a bucket truck after it was tranquilized by a biologist from the state Division of Fish & Wildlife.
