NY Times Opinionater: Harbor Herons and ghosts on an East River Boat Tour

“Fast, sleek, elegant … can anyone tell me what that is?” our guide calls out, pointing at the sky. We have just pulled out of New York Harbor, wind lifting the flaps of our purses and murses, the financial district glittering at our backs.

“A swallow?” comes a voice from the crowd. “A falcon?”

“No,” the guide replies, scanning our hopeful faces. “A pigeon.”

I retreat to the far side of the boat to take pictures of buildings. I left my air-conditioning for this? A pigeon?
