WNJ Exclusive: Sandy Hook American Oystercatcher

I trekked out to the end of Fisherman's Trail at the north tip of Sandy Hook on Wednesday and plunked down to watch the assortment of birds, including Piping Plover, Ruddy Turnstone, Common & Least Tern, and Gulls. I was sitting near the stop sign while a family of American Oystercatchers came out of the dunes and headed for the pools left by a receding tide. They came to within 30 meters of me.

I've uploaded a sequence of photos showing the chicks feeding both from the parents as well as on their own, bathing, and exploring. At one point there was quite a discussion between 2 pairs of Oystercatchers, while one of the chicks decided it was nap time after his bath.
