A gull chick takes a quizzical look at the human visitors on Hoffman Island. Members of a NYC Audubon team were on the restricted island to count the gull nests and other birds.

My attention had been up in the trees counting cormorant nests and watching jumpy parent birds coming and going. Grubel, a City University of New York graduate student, and I were part of a small group participating in a Harbor Herons Survey on Hoffman Island, located about a mile off of South Beach.
