David Wheeler, chief operations officer of the Edison Wetlands Association, pulls back healthy cattails from the Helen Street Wetlands within the Dismal Swamp to take a look at what outdoor enthusiasts call the Everglades of Central Jersey. The Helen Street Wetlands, the largest body of water within the Dismal Swamp, helps to clean the drinking water taken from the Raritan River. The Edison Wetlands Association hopes to turn the Dismal Swamp into outdoor education center in order to protect and promote its many uses, including habitat, recreation and scientific exploration. The wetlands are threatened by development plans in South Plainfield and toxins at the adjacent Meadow Brook Road Superfund site.
