When local filmmaker and journalist Jared Flesher completed his 2010 documentary “The Farmer and the Horse,” an observant valentine to the nostalgic practice of draft-horse farming, he began writing a list of topics he’d like to explore next. Renewable energy? Local wildlife habitats? Upon making the list, he realized that all of his topics had a common thread – make that a common ground. The Sourlands, a 17-mile ridge that runs from Lambertville to Hillsborough, and touches Somerset County, Hunterdon County and Mercer County, is a haven of vital sustainable practices. It’s the only major patch of green between Philadelphia and New York, and, as Flesher tells it, it’s “Central Jersey’s last wilderness.” It’s also the subject of the eco-minded media maker’s new film.
