An old pair of long johns, two tires, a shovel, soccer balls and a deflated raft, along with a huge number of plastic bags and bottles, were among the five cubic yards of trash volunteers pulled from the Kearny Marsh Sunday as part of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s annual cleanup.

Co-sponsored by the Bergen County Audubon Society and the Northern New Jersey Cachers, the second annual event drew more than 20 volunteers who spent several hours in canoes and walking the shoreline cleaning up the habitat that is home to a growing number of birds, fish and other wildlife.
