A half-dozen egrets slope their long necks underwater as they feed in a pond. Nearby, snapping turtles bask in the sun as long reeds billow in the breeze behind them. A hawk flies overhead and perches on the branch of a dead tree jutting from the mushy floor of the channel, where a pair of muskrats play and swim and play some more.

From the train window of a weary commuter, this snapshot of wildlife within the Meadowlands inspired David Wheeler to trade in his marketing career in New York City for a post as an environmental activist and educator seven years ago.
