Six water pollution control projects have been awarded a total of $3.2 million in federal aid, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced last Wednesday. A total of $1 million of the aid will target pollution runoff into Barnegat Bay.

The projects, funded through the DEP's federal Clean Water Act grant program, are designed to reduce the amount of pollution entering the state's waters. So-called nonpoint pollution results from animal waste, excess fertilizers, motor vehicle fluids, litter and other pollutants that are washed into local waterways by stormwater runoff. Reducing the runoff is a key components of Gov. Chris Christie's 10-point Barnegat Bay restoration plan.
