Birders and wildlife lovers from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey will gather on February 5, 2011 for Cumberland County’s 10th Annual Eagle Festival. The festival promises visitors a day packed with guided and unguided trail walks, lectures, exhibits, wildlife sightings, and the annual Chili Bowl fundraiser.

The area is home to many bird species. Last year’s sightings included Cooper’s hawks, Red-tailed hawks, Northern harriers, Merlins, American kestrels, Peregrine falcons, various owl species, and of course, eagles. Visitors may also be able to spot the area’s other wildlife species, such as river otters.

“The Eagle Festival is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together on a cold winter's day and see the amazing range of raptors and other types of birds which make our area their home. Because Cumberland County is endowed with such a wide diversity of habitats: marshes, estuaries, fields, woods, and uplands, we offer nesting and foraging areas for many threatened, endangered, and uncommon species,” says Leslie Ficcaglia, a volunteer of the Eagle Festival.

There will be four staffed viewing sites throughout the day. The Sunrise Walk at Turkey Point, which begins at 7:00 am, will give visitors a morning glimpse of Cumberland County’s amazing species. The Tat Star Trail Walk will begin at 10:00 am, followed by the Bald Eagle Trail Walk at 1:00 pm, and the Owl Watch at 5:00 pm.

The festival is sponsored by the Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders with support from Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River and its Tributaries, New Jersey Audubon, the Cape May Bird Observatory, National Park Service, Natural Lands Trust and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

The Eagle Festival will be held at the Mauricetown Fire Hall from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years of age. For more information, visit www.co.cumberland.nj.us or www.facebook.com/WinterEagles.
