Linda's for the Birds: Wings Over LBI Event

Join the Southern Ocean Birding Group at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park on March 5, 2011, for a wonderful day of winter birding at its best. In partnership with the Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, this birding event will be a day of learning and watching birds for the whole family. Barnegat Inlet is, according to William J. Boyle Jr. author of A Guide to Finding Birds in New Jersey, “one of the best places in New Jersey to look for Northern Gannet, Common and King Eiders, Harlequin Duck, and Black-legged Kittiwake". Other possible species that are viewable during the winter months include, but are not limited to, Red-breasted Mergansers, Scoters, Purple Sandpipers, Long-tailed Ducks, Snow Bunting, Horned Lark, "Ipswich Sparrow" and Common Goldeneye.
A variety of programs will be available for visitors to attend during the day. At 10:00 a.m. a presentation by the Southern Ocean Birding Group at the Barnegat Lighthouse Visitor Center; Science Saturday at the Long Beach Island Foundation will present Energy Audit with architect Jay Madden, geared towards energy savings and reduction; and at 1 p.m., again at the Barnegat Lighthouse Visitor Center, Fred Lesser of the Ocean County Parks Department will talk about the Winter Birds of Barnegat Inlet. All during the day, members of the Southern Ocean Birding Group will be stationed along the concrete jetty with binoculars and scopes in order to help identify birds and answer questions.
Also, at the Long Beach Island Foundation, birding artwork by local artists will be displayed at the Blai Gallery, open from 9-2 Saturday and Sunday, and local environmental non-profits will have information tables set up from 9-1 on Saturday in the main gallery. Bird viewing is also available at the Foundation at their elevated platform that overlooks some of the last natural marshes left on Long Beach Island.
