My Central Jersey: Escaped horses rounded up on Route 22 in Mountainside


County employees were able to quickly corral 18 horses that broke through a locked
gate at the Watchung Stable and galloped onto Route 22 off Summit Road.

Some people believe Route 22 can be like the lawless Old West during rush hour, but on Sunday morning there was the closet thing to a stampede and a roundup the highway has seen.

At about 8:15 a.m., 18 horses, apparently spooked by an unknown and random occurrence, broke through a locked gate at the Watchung Stable and galloped onto Route 22 off Summit Road.
