We can all agree that last year was rough, but cliches aside, let's not dwell in the past. Let's all take a deep breath and tell ourselves it's time to get going again. At the start of a New Year we all feel the need to recommit ourselves to the things we believe in.
I firmly believe that each person can make a difference. We need to provide an example, educate, and encourage wherever we get the chance. The more people we can motivate to do the right things, the more it becomes mainstream. So here's a list to start off with - feel free to add your suggestions:
- Get to know your local birds & wildlife - what are their issues?
- Create more backyard habitat, or if you don't have one, volunteer at a park or wild area to create better habitat.
- Reduce use of harmful pesticides and chemicals.
- If you see rare (endangered or threatened) wildlife, report it to the NJDEP - there is an online form.
- Get involved - go to local planning board meetings, write letters, and send emails.
- Take an "eco" vacation, lots of birding trips are available. Also see Sierra Club trips and hikes for other options.
- Beware of green washing - nobody will say they're against the environment, but what are they really for?
- Reduce, reuse, recycle!
- Buy local and/or organic when possible.
- Plant a seed - bring someone new to birding or nature.

Great Points Mary Ellen, The Environment is Everyone's resposibility . Keep up the good work
