Chicago Journal: Urban Chicago coyotes offer lesson for New Jersey

Seen a coyote on rat patrol downtown lately? A video captured in mid-November showed an energetic, healthy-looking coyote dodging late-night cars on State Street, and it has inspired a fair amount of talk about the city’s relationship with the urban coyote.

Chicago Breaking News Center, a Tribune website, quoted Brad Block, a supervisor for the Chicago Commission on Animal Care and Control, as saying that the State Street coyote’s “job is to deal with all of the nuisance problems, like mice, rats and rabbits.” A large percentage of a Chicago coyote’s diet includes rabbits, mice and rats. While that’s good for the city’s pest control campaign, is this wild behavior really sanctioned by the city?
