This year, New Jersey had 985,798 acres of farm-assessed land, down 13,101 acres from last year, according to the Department of Agriculture. Cropland comprised about half that land, while woodland amounted to more than a third. The rest were pastures, according to state data.

Property owners paid a total of $11.3 million in taxes on the nearly 1 million acres. That’s a median of $10.39 an acre — a 98 percent property tax break.
