New Jersey's saltwater anglers will need to fork over $15 in the coming year to be listed on the new federal angler registry unless the state Legislature acts in the next couple of weeks to create a free state registry, industry advocates say.

The registry would be used to survey recreational fishers to collect information on catches to help officials manage the various fisheries.

Of 24 coastal states, only New Jersey and Hawaii have held out against the decades-long trend toward state recreational saltwater fishing licenses.
