Officials are planning a necropsy to try to determine why a short-beaked common dolphin that washed ashore in New Jersey died. Marine Mammal Stranding Center director Robert Schoelkopf says the dolphin died in transport after it was taken off a beach in Sea Isle City Wednesday.

Schoelkopf told The Press of Atlantic City it was the third dolphin to wash ashore in southern New Jersey in recent weeks. Schoelkopf says all three were of species that live far offshore and migrate south this time of year. Schoelkopf says the weaker ones come ashore.
