NJ.com: First invasive Chinese pond mussel arrives in America - in Hunterdon County

Scientists display the invasive zebra mussel in this 2006 file photo. Now another species, the Chinese pond
mussel, has been spotted in New Jersey, the first of such sightings on the continent.

They don’t look threatening, but the large, freshwater mussels discovered in Hunterdon County could mark the first North American invasion by a potentially pesky mollusk already troubling European waters.

State biologists said they were stunned by recent DNA tests confirming that the clam-like creatures found last spring at a former Franklin Township fish farm are Chinese pond mussels, or Sinanodontawoodiana.
