Long ago glaciers carved peaks and valleys into New Jersey’s landscape. One especially unique formation that was created is known today as Point Mountain. It is located in the northern most part of Hunterdon County and is named for its defined ridge. At the peak giant rocks bulge out of the mountain side providing the perfect vantage point from which to view the valley. From the summit the people below are nearly invisible and cars look like toys as they navigate the autumn mosaic of changing leaves and farmer’s fields.

The breathtaking view is accessible via a short but moderately difficult hike. Difficulty is directly proportional to the steepness of the trail and number of bear encounters. Hikers will also want to watch out for loose rocks. Walk slowly so as to enjoy the beautiful scenery without tripping. Point Mountain is as equally pleasing to the ears as it is to the eyes. Birders especially will appreciate the soundtrack our avian friends echo throughout the woods. Birding enthusiast will also be aided by the bird’s eye view from the peak which will help them to think more like a bird. Species, such as red-tail hawks, turkey vultures, and northern harriers, are easily spotted from the top of the mountain.

So, this fall season grab some friends and head to Point Mountain for an unforgettable view. See you at the top!
