A broken net on a fishing vessel caused the wash-up of thousands of dead menhaden on the Hereford Inlet and North Wildwood shores in Cape May County over the weekend, according to an investigation by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife.
The boat, which was not immediately identified, reported that one of its nets broke, releasing an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of fish.
