Yes, that stuff floating in the water last week was reddish, but no, it was not red tide. Nor was it toxic, environmental officials from New York and New Jersey said on Wednesday.

The 10-mile-long string of algae in New York Harbor was harmless, officials from the two states said after analyzing water samples collected near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and in Raritan Bay. Go swimming? Go fishing? Perfectly safe to do both, they said.
