Local residents need not go to the Serengeti to see one of nature’s most spectacular wildlife migrations. Every August on the banks of the Maurice River, purple martins and other swallows gather in the tens of thousands, forming huge clouds of birds in a display unmatched in New Jersey.
“It’s absolutely amazing. I’ve never seen so many birds in my life!” Diana Pierce, 50, of Glassboro, exclaimed as she watched the birds near the Mauricetown Causeway spanning the river.
