By Kristen Meistrell: "In May 2009, I began work with Brian Zarate of the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program (ENSP) to help conserve some of the fascinating species of wildlife that live in our state. Now, entering my second season with ENSP, I have the privilege of working with rare reptiles and amphibians such as the bog turtle, wood turtle and long-tailed salamander. I feel very lucky that I have seen more of New Jersey’s wildlife than most people my age. I’ve also had the opportunity to be part of some exciting initiatives from amphibian migration studies to chorus and leopard frog sampling. But, the most interesting and meaningful project for me has certainly been working to conserve the state endangered and federally threatened bog turtle.
